On August 19, 2008, Oromo rebels wearing
Ethiopian federal police camouflages went to Thathesa village near
Chamuq and opened fire killing five and injuring three. The village
security guards thought they were visited by federal security forces
that were stationed nearby and they did not react to the Oromo militia
or rebels. However, the village security forces fought back and chasing
them out, killing eighteen of the invading rebels, and injuring a dozen
more. According to eyewitness accounts, the injured Oromo rebels wearing
Ethiopian federal police uniforms were seen treated in Moyale hospital
on the Kenya side of the border.
On August 18, 2008 the Oromo militia raided the Gabra village at Did-Guchi
and occupied it for few hours. They looted, and burned down a dozen huts
and ransacked the rest before they were repulsed. At the end, three men
were killed including two Borana and one Gabra fighter.
A week ago, Gharri and Oromo leaders signed a peace accord but, it is
not known why the Oromo militias raided Thathesa villages which is under
the Gharri administrative zone and inhabited by indigenous Gharri citizens.
Also, large numbers of Oromo rebels and militias have been seen
stationed at Waqo Dogo’s village near Malab to attack Malab and Arbora
villages. So, all women and children have been evacuated from all nearby
villages in the vicinity of the war zones. Therefore, a full fledged war
is imminent between the Gharri and Oromos if the Oromo militias attack
any of the Gharri villages
