There are very high tensions between the Wajir and Mandera County administrations. On May 13, the Degodia militia from Wajir County crossed into the Fincharo location in Madera County in an attempt to take over the land. Fighting ensued and 3 Degodia intruders were killed and 3 were injured. There are no casualties and only one injury reported from the Gharri side.

A Kenyan police officer from the Degodia clan shot 2 Gharri men in Nairobi after hearing the news from Fincharo, killing one and injuring the other. Also, two weeks prior to today’s incident, the Degodia crossed into Fincharo and when they were questioned by unarmed people they responded by opening fire, injuring one civilian.

The community elders from both sides tried to defuse the situation. When things finally seemed to be progressing with the peace talks, the Degodia armed with AK-47’s proceeded to undo all that hard work with today’s incident. As long as the Degodia refuse to live peacefully with their neighbors, more incidents are likely to continue happening. We will let you know as soon as the latest information becomes available.
