The Gabra and Borana conflict intensified on the second day of fighting: - On Thursday Moyale residents woke up with the sounds of automatic machine guns and heavy artillery.After 7 days of sporadic fighting and road blockades, full-fledged fighting started on Wednesday December 04, 2013 in which Borana community celebrated victory. However, on Thursday December 05, 2013, a new assault began early in the morning at
Harhosa and Holale location and continued for about 4 hours. Reports indicate that the Gabra fighters gained the upper hand and pushed the Borana fighters away from the city in today’s fighting. Subsequently, 10 people were allegedly killed including 9 Borana fighters and 1 Gabra fighter.
The Gabra claim to have captured the automatic machine guns below from the Borana fighters since the Gabra-Borana conflict started 6 months ago.
In the past, the fighting took place in rural areas away from the city. Now, since most of the villagers have fled to the Moyale and Sololo areas, the warring militias have begun blocking transportation and are fighting closer to cities. The police have failed to protect and serve the people. They have been reduced to nothing more than spectators and are staying in their Barricades. |
